This talk provides an in-depth comparison between Eclipse Theia and VS Code OSS, two leading technologies in the area of integrated development environments (IDEs) and tools. We will delve into a multi-dimensional comparison covering adaptability and flexibility, available features, as well as governance and ecosystem.

Theia was always designed to be used as a web and desktop IDE. It's origin as a web IDE allowed to easily bridge the gap to remote systems to work on your code. However, this still confines you - as a user - to the infrastructure of the IDE provider.

A recent push in two directions has made Theia more flexible in this regard: Natively integrated remote capabilities via SSH and live collaboration features allow Theia users to make use any workspace they want. All while keeping the well-known look and feel of Theia's desktop and web apps.

In this presentation I will explain what these features are, how they can be used and how they work. We will cover this in depth from an internal framework perspective as well as the adopter perspective.

In recent years, the rise of several open-source components has enabled the migration of modeling tools to web-based tech stacks. While this allows for leveraging traditional technologies like EMF, it often leads to compromises, such as a mixed developer experience with TypeScript and Java, and inflexible deployment architectures, resulting in high maintenance and increased operational costs in the cloud.

In this talk, we unveil a fresh architecture for domain-specific modeling tools that leaves no room for compromises or legacy components from the desktop. This innovative approach integrates cutting-edge open-source technologies, including Eclipse Langium, the Node-based Eclipse GLSP, and novel components of EMF Cloud. All components are native Typescript, which means developers can enjoy a consistent development experience across all components and achieve more efficiency in cloud resource utilization. In fact, you can even run your entire modeling tool directly in the browser, eliminating the need for dedicated cloud infrastructure.

We demonstrate this architecture in action through a feature-rich, open-source example modeling tool, which can serve as a blueprint for your projects. Our presentation offers a comprehensive overview of these integrated technologies, their synergies, and discusses best practices for building state-of-the-art modeling tools in the web-based tool era.

We adopted Eclipse Theia as the foundation for developing webMethods Java services in our cloud platform. We'll explain why we chose Theia and how we extended it.

HCL DevOps Code RealTime is a new extension for Theia that provides tools for developers of C++ realtime applications that consist of communicating state machines. It supports the Art language with high-level concepts not directly found in C++, such as state machines, capsules and events. In addition to a textual syntax, Art also has a graphical notation including state diagrams. A code generator translates Art files into optimized C++ code which can be built for a variety of target platforms. In this session you will get an overview of the Art language and how Code RealTime can be used for creating stateful realtime applications. We will also share our experiences from developing a commercial Theia extension using technologies such as Xtext and GLSP.

The Theia Ecosystem has been at the forefront of cloud and desktop-based IDEs. A key component of that ecosystem is the Open VSX Registry.

The Open VSX Working Group, a collaboration of industry leaders and open-source enthusiasts, has emerged as a driving force behind the operation and availability of the Open VSX Registry. The Working Group has set its sights on furthering a truly open and inclusive marketplace for extensions.
